 Lovely painting Wendy, I like the balance to this. I've never used the water soluble oils, how are they to work with compared to regular oils? H x

Good work Wendy!

BTW, why 3 balloons, but not two? :) I have always wondered why artists
prefer odd number of the objects in their works !? :cheer:

Hi Deco,

The size is 80cm x 30cm, Thanks for the comments. Love the close ups of the violin. Lovely to look at so long as your (at the time, 12 year old daughter isn't learning to play one, especially the fact that she is tone deaf). OH! how she practised.

Hi Helen,

The watersoluble oils are great, I find you can blend them easier than regular oils, you also don't have the nasty wiff of thinners, even the odourless ones pong. Thanks for the comments.

Hi Neo,

I was taught that odd numbers in paintings work better than even, apparently it is supposed to be more interesting. I have sometimes painted things like landscapes with two trees and somehow I always seem to add another because it looks right. If anyone would like to contribute their reasons I would be very interested to hear them. Thanks for the compliments, I am on a roll now another coming soon.

I think it's a lot to do with balance Neo, even numbers can give too much emphasis on lines and square shapes in a picture. But hey, it works in abstract! H x

Odd numbers in a composition give more unity and balance. If you have two objects in the painting your brain has a tendency to divide the painting up. When you add a third, it tends to bring them together and unify. Of course, that's just in general, as there are really no hard and fast rules in art.

Good work wendy, just a thought... think you should add some colour on the other two balloons, they look a bit greyish in comparison with the colour one :clapping:

I would disagree Merilin, if colours were added they might look out of perspective whereas now they look like they are further away. :clapping: H x

Hi Merilin,

I did the other two balloons with little or no detail cos they are supposed to look further away than the coloured one. I thought things that are farther away don't have the same detail or colour?

Aerial perspective makes it so as something moves further away it will be more greyish and neutral, have less detail, have less contrasts, and during the day it will be lighter and at night darker.

Maybe the middle ballon could have used a tiny bit more color and detail though. Otherwise, very nice painting and good composition.
