Hi... I'm stuck in the middle of a water colour project. I can't seem to get my clouds to look realistic. Any tips? Thanks so much. It's very much appreciated. :)

If i had a big enough scanner. It's a 10 x 14 watercolour canvas. I found an island picture that i started to paint and everything else in the painting (sand, palm trees, shrubbery etc) looks great, but I can't seem to get my clouds to have that real appearance. I thought of maybe using acrylic paint over the water colour and then putting water colour over the acrylic to give it a shadow-like appearance but i haven't gone through with it yet.

Hi FlowerChildArtFreak, welcome to the site! :)

I haven't done many water-colour works, but I know for certain,
that clouds are one of the most difficult things to draw.
I think it's a good idea to try to mix acrylic with water-colours,
hope you'll manage to take a photo of your work and will share it with us. :cheer:

Hi Flowerchildartfeak, welcome!

Sky and clouds are certainly difficult with watercolour. I tend to work upside down for the blues in the sky, and I also do it first. You could try light, watery washes and have some tissue handy to dab off the excess colour. Clouds also have shadows on the underneath. When I'm doing the clouds and shadow, I work the right way up again! I "practise" the cloud formation before I work on the piece, using different types of brushes depending on the cloud formation.

Good luck, hope this helps a bit! H x

:cheer: Hi flowerchildartfreak :) to Arttrade - I'm sure you will enjoy the site and there are lots of people to giv you advice - although I am not one of them cos I don't paint in watercolours. Sorry!!

Another thing - couldn't you find a 'shorter' name than flowerchildartfreak - it's a bit of a mouthful ;) :) :P

Hey everyone. I wanted to thank all of you for your help and input. My clouds are coming along. I mixed a little white acrylic paint with water colour to give it that "real" white look that clouds have, then when it dried i mixed light blue and white water colour to give it that shadowy look and it's turning out alright. thank you so much everyone.

heh, and i would change my name if i knew how.

thanks again. :) :cheer:

:) Hi Flowerchildartfreak - I was round the pool this afternoon and looked up to the sky and it was all clear blue sky except for these few clouds and thought of you. Thought they might help with a bit of cloud 'formation' :cheer: Just so you know these were all the way in Spain :P
