Hi All , These are pictures of my second ramshorn stick this one in the form of a trout . I could not get the green colour light enough to my liking . Have yet to find out about coloured inks which i think would be better . See what you think ; i'm open to any form of criticism which may help me better things . Regards Stickmaker

Excellent work. (Wishes I was as talented)

This isn't a criticism, cos I can't with work that good, but more a suggestion. Do you use metal leaf over your carvings of fish or silver inks/paint? I know you can get all sorts of finishes from aluminium through to silver and can just picture it with a silvery finish with the colour applied on top. Don't know if it's possible, but it looks great without. :clapping:

This is so different and interesting, great that you have posted pictures from start to finish, must take alot of skill to do all that carving. For me personally I like the green and the whole finished piece, vibrant and beautiful, just like the colours of a trout. :cheer:

Looks wonderfully Stckmaker! :cheer: I like the way you've achieved the
silvery gleam of the fish and the green colour looks perfectly in my opinion. :)
The whole process of making a stick is very interesting, will be great if you post your next idea as work in progress. :)

How do you get the scales? Is it the natural pattern of the horn, or hours whittling away?

Hi Graeme , Thanks for your input . No I did not use metal leaf but I did use as a base all over the fish W&N Galeria Metalics silver flow formula acrylic I then mixed - blended some crimson red to give pinkish hue on the belly and flanks. I made colour for the fins from ? The fins on the back of the fish are burnt in as are the other detailing and then painted. When I painted the back of the fish green I was hoping to get a much lighter colour but I put the green on when the silver base was dry and I think this is were I failed to get the lighter green I was hoping for. I am going to an artists shop to make enquiries as to how to apply inks, brush or pen and whether they would "run". I need to find out more. Regards Stickmaker. :cheer: :)

Hi drawingirl, Thanks very much for your comments but I feel the photograph is deceptive in the natural daylight the green is very much darker. Best Regards, Stickmaker. :cheer:

Hi Peter, Thanks for your remarks and interest. The horn is boiled and pushed into shape, they call it bulking. Some carving takes place after depending on what the subject is, but in this case as you will see on my picture before painting the only carving is on the fish mouth. The rest of the details are all burnt in. I have a long way to go yet this is only my second ramshorn handled stick. The stick in this case is holly and I have waxed it. Regards Stickmaker. :) :cheer: :)

Loooked up some info on drawing inks for you Stickmaker here it is.......

Drawing Inks are formulated from a series of soluble dyes in a superior shellac solution. These inks can be applied with Brush, Pen or Airbrush. Advantages of using Drawing Inks are: Brilliant Colours; Fast Drying and Water Resistant; Fully Intermixable; Easily Diluted (with distilled water) and have excellent adhesion on most types of sized surface.
Most drawing Inks do not possess the lightfast properties of pigments. Work that is intentended for display in lighted areas should not be executed with Colour Inks. This does not apply to black, white and metallic colours. Care should be taken when using an Airbrush to ensure that the ink does not dry inside as this will make the airbrush unusable.
Hope this helps you :)
