Hi all, Found this site whilst looking for help, advice, information on above. I have recently retired and have started making walking sticks with Rams horn handles. I have just made my first one in the shape of a pheasants head. I would like to carve in the feathering and colour with iridescent acrylic paint to make it look realistic. I visited an art shop but did not get much information. I visited a garden centre and did receive some information i.e. iridescent medium to use with water colour? Acrylic would be better I feel. What would I actually need 1 iridescent medium to use with all acrylic colours. I am confused can anyone help. I want to make this pheasants head lifelike as a live birds feathering. Thanks for any help received. Regards Stickmaker. :icon_peace:

Hi Stickmaker and welcome here. :icon_peace:
interesting idea to make decorative sticks, I suppose acrylic would be fine
or other water-soluble paints as water-colour, which are better for iridescent
images but of course all of them need to be finally varnished. :black_eye:
I've used wood stain to tinge some of my wood frames it has different nuances
and the colour ink also can be of use.

If you don't mind I'll move this topic to "Other Art Projects":

where will be better to be :black_eye:

hi stickmaker
windsor and newton used to produce a tube which should serve your purposes called "iridescent white" I dont know if they still do. it has a white base and dose lighten other colours slightly so you should do some experimenting before you use it on the stick.

just checked they still do its in the finty range found it hereartsuplies

alternstively have you looked at moddling acrylics? Vallejo is widley regarded as the best range of paints by miniature figure painters here is a link vallejo modle colour range you should go for the 'modle colour' range rather than the 'game colour' range as it has more natural tones.

hope this helps :icon_peace:

also I am sure we would all like to see some examples of your work

HI All, Deco ,I'm afraid it's not an original Idea to decorate sticks I've seen some really beautiful sticks, which has brought me along this road. Thought I'd like to try to do some . Iv'e not seen any iridescent ie" change colour green to blue".Hawkwood , thanks for your info, not sure if this is what I want ie "glitter" not change of colour. However, has given me another idea, use throughout stick on other colours not made iridescent ? this would possibly , maybe, give too much glitter . I don't know will maybe experiment .Neo Art , Ive only got as far as making the pheasant head as yet as this is the first HORN handle Ive made. I have done several in stag antler which is entirely different . I'm not very clever on computer , however I'll see if my daughter can put some pictures on for forum could be at weekend maybe Regards Stickmaker :icon_peace:

There are some artists acrylics in irredescent colours but I have only ever seen them in bronze and gold and silver. Perhaps a craft shop might be worth a try. Good luck!!

Hi ya and welcome, I use acrlics and GOLDEN sell a big bottle of irridecent medium, sort of pearlesent. Also if the sticks are dark you could use an inteference medium, they also by GOLDEN, they come in red oxide, green oxide, copper, gold, silver, viloet oxide, all very very yummy, Crlya also do a similar product. Hope this helps, they work best on a very dark back ground. Good luck. X

HI Hawkwood , In referance to your suggestion to use finity iridescent white how would I use It, put in on first then go over it with desired colour, or the other way round ., OR mix the two colours together on a sample area to get what I require. Also would the other colours have to be out of the finity range or just be a normal acrylic. SORRY to be a pain but I'm totally thick as regards art & paints , was a press toolmaker for most of my working life. Thanks once again Stickmaker

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

no problem :cheer:

you can either mix the iridescent with the other colour or apply it as a wash after the other colour has dried. Personaly I've not used it much, and not at all in the last 10 years, so I cant tell you what the diference is. I would guess that you can use it with any artists acrylic though I only have experiance mixing it with other W&N paints. And I have had no problems in the past from mixing 'Finty' and 'Galleria' acrylics.

hope that covers everything but if you have anyother questions feel free to yell, either as a post or PM ;)

HI AII , I've posted these views of one stick made using , hazel, staghorn (antler) brass and 3 service buttons . I made this for my brother in law who served in royal navy , royal airforce & the coastguards . I used 1 button from each , placing the senior service button (R N ) at the top in the coronet .Regards Stickmaker
