interesting idea to make decorative sticks, I suppose acrylic would be fine
or other water-soluble paints as water-colour, which are better for iridescent
images but of course all of them need to be finally varnished.
I've used wood stain to tinge some of my wood frames it has different nuances
and the colour ink also can be of use.
If you don't mind I'll move this topic to "Other Art Projects":

where will be better to be

windsor and newton used to produce a tube which should serve your purposes called "iridescent white" I dont know if they still do. it has a white base and dose lighten other colours slightly so you should do some experimenting before you use it on the stick.
just checked they still do its in the finty range found it hereartsuplies
alternstively have you looked at moddling acrylics? Vallejo is widley regarded as the best range of paints by miniature figure painters here is a link vallejo modle colour range you should go for the 'modle colour' range rather than the 'game colour' range as it has more natural tones.
hope this helps
also I am sure we would all like to see some examples of your work

you can either mix the iridescent with the other colour or apply it as a wash after the other colour has dried. Personaly I've not used it much, and not at all in the last 10 years, so I cant tell you what the diference is. I would guess that you can use it with any artists acrylic though I only have experiance mixing it with other W&N paints. And I have had no problems in the past from mixing 'Finty' and 'Galleria' acrylics.
hope that covers everything but if you have anyother questions feel free to yell, either as a post or PM
