I have found, after reading in an old book about the Old Masters, if you are painting a surface which is white or has white on it add a tiny amount of blue to your white, which brings it to life and strangely makes it more naturally white, then if your subject has a surface which also has a highlight on that white you just use the white paint straight from the tube over your white/blue mix which then gives the impression of a more intense white or intense light.
It does work very well, and this is the method I use to paint eyes, metal, glass and any other subjects requiring reflection.
