when i draw a picture i try to have really dark darks and really white whites. it seems to make for a better picture. a problem i've been running into a lot is when i darken a spot to the point that it is shiny. i don't want it to be shiny, just black, but i can't figure out how to get one without the other . i always draw with strathmore drawing paper(unrecycled of course) and a mechanical pencil with .5 lead while occaisonally switching to one of my mars lumograph pencils for a more textured background or similair effect. i've tried using a matte fixative and layering on top of it, but with no improvement.
if anyone else has had this problem and figured out a solution i would be grateful if you'd post.

I don't draw with pencil to much, used these in the art school,
but it was obligatory subject
Don't think you'll manage to avoid that shiny effect, graphite (plumbago)
always does this, it's one of its properties. Even if you use matte fixative
or layering it doesn't help. Maybe if you try to frame some of the works
you like under matt glass they might look diferently. Or try to use paper
which has special coat for graphic works.
